Bruce Douglas Cockburn was born in Pembroke (Ontario) and is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as adult alternative pop/rock (a branch of alternative rock - emerging after the genre's absorption into the mainstream – featuring a smooth, melodic, radio friendly style that packages alternative's mellower side for wider consumption), contemporary folk (an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of genres - emerging in the mid 20th century and onwards - which were associated with traditional folk music), indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegaze), urban folk, and progressive folk. His lyrics address a broad range of topics including human rights, environmental issues, politics, and spirituality. He’s had a stellar career with 26 studio albums and his songs have been covered by Barenaked Ladies, Judy Collins, Jimmy Buffett, Tom Rush, Steve Bell, and many other renowned bands and artists. He’s received many accolades including 13 Juno Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
