John Robert Hiatt was born in Indianapolis in 1952 and is a rock guitarist, pianist, singer, and songwriter. Over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as Americana (contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, blues, roots rock, R&B, folk, and bluegrass, resulting in a distinctive roots oriented sound), folk rock, Heartland rock (a subgenre of rock music - exemplified by the commercial success of singer-songwriters Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Tom Petty, and John Mellencamp – that’s characterized by a straightforward musical style, a concern with the average, blue-collar American life, and a conviction that rock music has a social or communal purpose beyond just entertainment), country, and blues. He's had a stellar career with 35 studio albums, 32 singles, and his music has been featured on many soundtrack albums and compilation albums. He's received many accolades including a Nashville Music Award (for Songwriter/Artist of the Year) and an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. His work has also been covered by Aaron Neville, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, and many other renowned artists. He performs with a backing band called the Goners.
